Isle of Skye Workshop 2015.

Wednesday.

We got up early on the Wednesday as we wanted to be at Eileen Donan Castle for sunrise. We got there just beforehand and waited it out. There was a large bank of cloud that threatened to spoil the fun but again we waited for it to clear. When the light eventually hit the castle the sky was clear behind but for a few nice golden whispy clouds – perfect! We stayed there for a short while then got talking to one of the staff from the castle (who just happens to be a talented photographer) who showed us a great vantage point a bit higher up to shoot the castle from. We ventured up and sure enough it was a lovely spot. Great views over the castle and Loch Duich all the way to Skye 10 miles away. After that we decided to get straight to Glencoe as time was pushing on so we missed out the 5 sisters of Kintail stop and set a course for Glencoe Lochan via the commando memorial at Spean Bridge. The light was great at the commando memorial and everyone bagged some decent shots. Then off we went to Glencoe. We arrived at Glencoe Lochan at around half 2 and only spent about 35 minutes there. There’s only really one shot you can take from there and everyone had taken a nice one shortly after getting there so no point in hanging around! We set off again up the A82 and headed up through Glencoe to Buachaille Etive Mor. There was yet another storm front closing in when we arrived at Glencoe so it was a mad dash up to take the “classic” shot before the rain set in. Luckily it didn’t hang around for long and in the fading sunlight that followed we stayed to shoot the mountain and the river Coupal. I ventured a little way up the river and waded out into the water for a slightly different shot, it turned out to be my favourite shot of the entire trip and had me dancing around in my underpants afterwards! We then made a quick stop at the Green Welly Stop for some tea and a drink before heading back home. We arrived back in Newcastle at around 11pm on the Wednesday night.

An absolutely amazing trip. I couldn’t have imagined it going any better, slightly rubbish weather aside. Everyone had an amazing time, bagged some fantastic shots and made some great friends. I know I’ll never forget this trip, it was once in a lifetime. The laughs and funny moments were ten a penny and just didn’t stop the whole week. I’ll treasure the photos and the memories that came with them.

I’d like to say a big thank you to Martin Steele, We ran this workshop together and it was incredible. It was well planned and the locations were spot on. Martin knows Skye really well and made some good judgements on the weather that really paid off.

Thank you to Jim, Bob, Jake, Dave and Jonathan for coming too. You guys made the trip, a great mix of lads!

Here’s to the next one in March!
