Italy February 2017

Italy – February 2017

Friday

So Friday 24th February was finally here, today was the day I travelled on my first solo adventure abroad! My destination? Italy, specifically the Dolomites. This trip was organised in a matter of days, at the very last minute. I’d seen loads of photos from the Dolomites and when I started to do some research I started to find that all these amazing places I was looking at were within a few hours of each other. The cogs started ticking and I started to hatch a plan, I’d go and scout these places out with a view to returning to run a photographic workshop in the Autumn when the colours were at their best and the tourists had gone back to their 9-5.

Excitedly I packed the last of my gear into the car and said goodbye to the girls. It’s difficult to say goodbye to my family when I’m going away for a few days, I have a 3 year old daughter so leaving is always tough. I set off around 9am for the Drive to Edinburgh, at this time of year you can’t fly direct to Italy from Newcastle so the compromise was a flight from Edinburgh to Venice followed by a drive into the Dolomites. I arrived at Edinburgh at around 12pm, parked the car and headed into departures to check in. I sent my case through check-in and made my way to the departure lounge for some food before my flight. When I was packing my gear at home, I was trying to figure out how I could get all my camera gear safely to Italy without it going in the hold, Thankfully my F-Stop Satori EXP is just the right size for hand luggage allowance at 56cm tall and with no weight limit flying with Easyjet I was good to go. This bag is a Tardis, I managed to fit the following in with a room to spare …

After some food, I boarded the plane for the 2 hour 15 minute flight to Venice Marco Polo airport. A few minutes later we were off, it felt like no time at all before we landed. I say that, the woman snoring next to me did her best to turn it into an unpleasant flight but to be honest the sheer excitement for the trip made up for being crammed in next to her and her growling! We landed in Venice around 7pm Local time, I picked up my car and headed off to my first stop … Verona. As I was driving to Verona I got my first glimpse of the Mountains. It was already after sunset and as I was driving I thought I could see clouds out the window, however when I stopped to have a look it was a sheer cliff face some 1000m tall with a snow capped peak. This humongous hill was just the start of what was to come. My plan was to shoot a cityscape of Verona from Castel San Pietro but when I arrived in the car park at around midnight I was knackered so sleep became the priority. I headed up the hill from the castle and parked up for some much needed rest.
