A 3 day workshop in North Yorkshire, including a mixture of both landscape and wildlife photography!!
This trip is ran in partnership with my good friend and professional wildlife photographer Alan Hewitt, a well respected wildlife and conservation photographer. Alan also runs courses all year round including Puffin & Seabird workshops on the Farne Islands, birds of prey workshops in Northumberland and photography safaris in Kenya’s Masai Mara and South Africa. He also writes regular features for photography and wildlife magazines.
Our itinerary covers three full days of great photography with Alan and I on hand to give you as much or as little help as you would like.
- Day 1 – Our meeting point on day 1 will be at Studley Royal deer park, North Yorkshire. We’ll spend the day photographing Red, Sika and Fallow deer before moving on to our accommodation. In October, the stage is set for the annual deer rut and we should hopefully see stags rutting to assert their dominance! Not only is Studley Royal a great location for the deer, there are plenty of opportunities for landscape photography in the park as well. Both myself and Alan will be on hand at all times.
- Day 2 – On day 2 we’ll split into two groups. One group will go to a private Red Squirrel hide which we will have exclusive use of and the other half will be photographing the beautiful waterfalls at Aysgarth on the River Ure. Waterfalls provide an excellent subject for landscape photography as their versatility allows for a wide variety of shots, from wide angle shots to more intimate telephoto shots focussing on details and shapes. I will be on hand at all times during the waterfall sessions to assist. The Red Squirrel hide we use has an incredible success rate for sightings and often has numerous reds there at once. There’s room for 4 people at any one time in the main hide, as well as space for 2 at the reflection pool. Alan or I will be available in the hides for assistance throughout the day.
- Day 3 – Same layout as day 2 but with the groups doing the opposite of the previous day!
Our accommodation is the Eastfield Lodge guest house situated in the small town of Leyburn in the Yorkshire Dales. We have booked this exclusively for 2 nights. There is a mixture of single, double and twin rooms. Some same sex sharing may be necessary and priority booking of the doubles will be given to couples.
In the evenings the plan is flexible. We can either go to the pub for some food and a few pints and talk all things photography, we can stay in the house and get some food to eat in or if you’d prefer to do your own thing that’s fine with us too.
For our workshops, both myself and Alan are sponsored by LEE Filters – The market leaders in photographic filters. LEE are the filters of choice for numerous professional photographers and I am very proud to be endorsed by them. At Studley Royal, and whilst visiting the waterfalls you’ll have access to the following :-
- LEE 100mm Foundation kit filter holder with various adaptor rings
- A set of 100mm x 150mm graduated ND filters
- LEE “Big Stopper” (10 stop ND filter) for long exposure work
What you’ll need to bring ….
- DSLR with a telephoto lens, preferably 300mm+ as this will allow you to get frame filling shots of both the deer at Studley Royal and the red squirrels at the hide. It’ll also let you get close up shots of the waterfalls.
- Wide angle lens to use at the waterfalls. I’d suggest bringing something in the range of 17-40mm (full frame) or 11-20mm (crop sensor)
- Graduated ND filters – these are essential for landscape photography.
- Polariser – if you have one I’d suggest bringing it, they’re great for cutting out reflections on water!
- Tripod and tripod head as well as memory cards and batteries. Bring a battery charger too as long exposures can run batteries down fairly quick!!
- Wellies – it’d be a good idea to bring these for both the waterfalls and Studley Royal.
- Walking boots / warm coat / hat / gloves etc.
- Laptop for processing / image reviewing (not essential but we will more than likely have a look through photos in the evenings)
- change for parking, parking is around £5.00 a day at all the locations however Studley Royal is free for National trust members.
